What It Tells You — and What It Doesn’t
A TDS meter estimates the concentration of dissolved ions from electrical conductivity. It is useful for comparing one water source with another and for checking a treatment trend — for example, whether an RO system is producing water with much lower TDS than its feed water.
A TDS reading does not tell you the water’s hardness by itself. Hardness should be measured with a direct hardness test. TDS also does not detect bacteria, viruses or many specific contaminants, so it cannot by itself answer whether water is safe to drink.
