The water-treatment market can be confusing. Different technologies solve different problems, and the most expensive system is not automatically the right one.
This guide covers the major treatment types, what each one changes in the water, and where each fits in a Los Cabos property.
Sediment filters
What they do: Remove physical particles — sand, silt, rust, and debris — by passing water through a porous medium. Micron rating determines the approximate particle size captured.
What they don’t do: Remove dissolved hardness minerals, dissolved chemicals, or provide reliable microbiological treatment by themselves.
Where they fit: Sediment control is often the first treatment layer because it protects pumps, valves, cartridges and downstream equipment.

Activated carbon
What it does: Activated carbon can reduce chlorine, taste, odor and selected organic compounds, depending on the media, contact time and product specification.
What it doesn’t do: Standard carbon filtration does not soften water and should not be treated as a universal microbiological barrier.
Where it fits: Carbon is commonly useful for drinking-water taste/odor objectives and as one stage in a broader treatment train.
Reverse osmosis (RO)
What it does: RO uses a membrane to substantially reduce many dissolved ions and contaminants in the treated stream.
What it doesn’t do: It is not the simplest answer to every water problem. RO creates reject water, requires pretreatment and maintenance, and a whole-house system involves storage, pumping and recovery considerations that are very different from an under-sink unit.
Where it fits: Point-of-use RO can be a strong option when the goal is low-TDS drinking and cooking water. Whole-house RO should be designed around actual water chemistry and demand.
UV disinfection
What it does: Properly designed UV systems use ultraviolet light to inactivate microorganisms as water passes through the reactor.
What it doesn’t do: UV does not remove sediment, hardness or dissolved chemicals. It also works best when incoming water meets the clarity and flow requirements of the specific unit.
Where it fits: UV can provide an additional microbiological barrier after appropriate pretreatment.
Water softeners (ion exchange)
What they do: Ion-exchange softeners remove calcium and magnesium hardness, reducing the mineral load that forms scale on heated equipment, fixtures and other surfaces.
Controlled WQRF/Battelle testing provides useful evidence that scale can materially affect water-heating performance. Under one specified gas-storage test condition, each additional 5 gpg of hardness was associated with an estimated 4% efficiency loss / increase in operating cost, reaching 24% at 30 gpg. Tankless units exposed to very hard water also accumulated substantial scale during accelerated testing.
The practical value of a softener depends on the property’s measured hardness, water use, hot-water equipment and maintenance burden.
What they don’t do: A softener is not a complete purifier. It does not replace sediment filtration, targeted chemical treatment or microbiological controls.

KDF media
What it does: KDF media uses copper-zinc redox chemistry and can be useful for selected chlorine and metal-removal applications, usually as part of a designed treatment train.
What it doesn’t do: It does not soften water or replace a validated microbiological treatment barrier.
Where it fits: KDF is a specialized media choice rather than a universal first step.
A practical way to build a Cabo treatment system
The right sequence depends on the actual water and the property, but a sensible decision path is:
- Keep sediment out and protect storage.
- Measure hardness, chlorine, TDS and any specific safety concern.
- Add whole-property treatment only for a measured whole-property problem.
- Treat drinking water at the point of use when that is the most efficient solution.
- Maintain each stage so the system continues to perform as designed.
You do not need every technology. The best system is the minimum combination that solves the problems your water actually has.
